Calibrating Your Computer's Battery for Best Performance.

I needed to purchase a new battery for a Notebook/Laptop computer recently, which proved to be a daunting task, as pricing is heavy in South Africa. Not cheap! I know for a fact there are lots of folk out there looking a good deal in NB batteries. Try Akita Business Solutions.

NB Computer batteries has an internal microprocessor that provides an estimate of the amount of energy in the battery as it charges and discharges. The battery needs to be recalibrated from time to time to keep the onscreen battery time and percentage display acurate. Performing this procedure should be done when you first use the battery and then every few months thereafter.

Changing the Power Options Properties.

• The Power option:
  • Right-click your mouse on the desktop of your computer screen. Left-click on the last option in the popup list Properties, next click the Screen Saver button, click the Power button, in the Power Schemes dialog, the default setting is Portable/Laptop.
  • When Computer is running on batteries tick never for all options.
  • Under the Alarms options tab, un-tick the Low battery Alarm and Critical Battery Alarm fucntions, clcik the Apply and OK buttons to save the new settings.
• Make certain all your work has been saved at this point, and disconnect the power adapter from your NB computer and allow the battery to discharge until the NB computer shuts down.
• Plug the power adapter in and fully charge your computer's battery to 100%. Upon initial use (or after a prolonged storage period) the battery may require three to four charge/discharge cycles before achieving maximum performance. The charging process should last around 14 hours.

Discharging the battery.

First discharge the battery until the NB computer shuts down (power off) before you recharge it 100% for calibration.

Info & Tip.

When the battery reaches "empty", (ie. flat, no power) the computer is forced into sleep mode. The battery actually keeps-back a reserve beyond "empty" to maintain the computer in sleep mode for a period of time. Once the battery is totaly exhausted, the computer is forced to shut down.
This is the point of no return! — ensure you saved all your work before you start the calibration process. Any open and unsaved data will be lost!

Storing the Battery.

Batteries may become damaged when stored for a prolonged period - if the battery will not be in use for longer than a month, it is recommended that it be charged 60% to 80% and removed from the computer, stored in a cool and dry place. Any charged battery will eventually loose its charge and become useless if unused over long periods. Always check and recharge the battery in storage.
